Thailand's modern grocery trade is effectively a duopoly plus a premium tier: Lotus's, Big C and Tops, all priced in THB. Lotus's and Big C run the hypermarkets and the thousands of mini-format branches in between, and they shadow each other's prices so closely that the gap on everyday staples is often a baht or two. Tops (Central Group) sits clearly above them, with a bigger imported range and prices to match.

But the supermarkets are only half the story. A large share of Thai households still buy fresh meat, fish, herbs and vegetables at the talad sot (wet market), where pork, chicken and produce are usually cheaper than any chain on this page — so treat the numbers here as the modern-trade price, not the floor. Domestic staples are cheap: jasmine rice, eggs, chicken, pork, fish sauce, limes and most vegetables. Anything imported is not — cheese, butter, olive oil, cured meats and Western bread carry an import-duty and cold-chain premium that can make a carbonara or a cheeseburger cost more to cook in Bangkok than in Madrid.

Here's the honest part: Thailand is the one country on this site where cooking at home frequently does NOT beat eating out. A plate of khao man gai or pad krapao from a street stall costs roughly 50–70 THB, and even with Grab or LINE MAN fees a Thai dish often lands near 90–120 THB delivered. For one person cooking Thai food, buying a whole bunch of herbs, a bottle of fish sauce and a tray of eggs rarely comes out cheaper than the stall downstairs. Home cooking wins clearly for Western and Korean/Japanese dishes, where restaurant and delivery prices are several times higher, and for families cooking 3–4 portions at once.
